Santa Fe, New Mexico Indian Market History -Dating back to 1922, the Santa Fe Indian Market boasts a colorful history. First established as the Southwest Indian Fair and Industrial Arts and Crafts Exhibition by the Museum of New Mexico, the event was created for the purpose of preserving and protecting Native American arts as part of the Santa Fe Fiesta. In 1927, a committee led by museum curator Kenneth Chapman took control of the Santa Fe's Indian Market. Later, in 1936 the management of the event was assumed by the New Mexico Association on Indian Affairs (NMAIA). In the 1960s, the market was moved to the weekend before the Santa Fe Fiesta, in order to better help the event flourish on its own. It was also during this period that the first rows of booths were set up for artists and the Santa Fe market started taking shape as a modern-day institution in Santa Fe.
